Q&A SERIES // Architecture + Design Library
This week we got the chance to catch up with Penny Calder from The Architecture + Design Library – a new shared workspace with a focus on Interior Designers and Architects, with all other industries welcome to join too. Penny and co-founder Verity Lawrence realised Wanaka had a huge number of Architects, Designers, Draftspeople and Builders - all who needed a professional work environment to meet with clients and colleagues. Their new space provides offices and open plan workspace as well as a meeting room, extensive sample room, an event space and pop-up show room.
How did the Architecture + Design Library come about?
Both Verity and myself are independent Interior Designers in Wanaka. We find that sourcing products and materials for our projects very frustrating, slow and inefficient. We noticed there were a significant number of designers and architects in the region experiencing the same challenges. We were also aware of professionals visiting the region needing a meeting space to meet clients.
These challenges are where the concept of the Architecture + Design Library came from. A shared workspace, extensive sample library for Architects + Designers to select finishes, and a professional meeting environment. We also have a popup showroom space for local and national products to be displayed and art exhibition space.
As an entrepreneur, what are the biggest lessons you’ve learnt so far?
Persistence and patience are the key.
What do you love about this region?
I love the environment and the people. The people in Wanaka amaze me on a weekly basis. I am constantly astounded at how many incredibly talented people are hiding away, working from home, achieving all levels of success.
What key activities would you recommend entrepreneurs to invest their time in?
Don't try to do everything yourself. There are incredibly talented people around who can push your business harder than you could ever do by yourself.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
I try really hard to jump in the shower as soon as possible before my kids bombard me and keep me in bed for another 1/2 hour. Early mornings to the gym are the key. I tiptoe out of the house before they even start to stir.
Can you share with us your company’s current big/or small goal?
We have had incredible support from our families, our friends, our members and our suppliers. We want to say a massive thank you to everyone involved by having an official opening for our first birthday. Verity and I have an incredible 10yr plan but it is rather large. It could take me quite some time to discuss.
How has Covid-19 effected your business?
We hadn't opened before Covid19 hit but we were deep in planning mode.
We definitely had a few moments of “do we still do this?” “is this super risky?”
Covid 19 created added opportunities for the offices to lease and this gave a fantastic location. It also changed the way people work and shared workspaces became more important as bigger business were wanting to downsize but still need at least one staff member.
What is the single best piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey?
Be patient and be kind to yourself. Magic doesn't happen overnight!
